What is craft beer?

Since we have been asked this question countless times, today we will do our best to give you a clear and concise answer. If you are here, chances are that you are at least familiar with the term “craft beer”. But what is it exactly? And how does it differ from “normal” beer?

Before answering this question, we first have to take a look at where craft beer is brewed.

Unlike commercially produced beer which is produced in large breweries, craft beer is produced in what is known as “micro-breweries”. If you live in Calgary, you might be familiar with the Minhas Micro Brewery, at least by name. For over two decades now we have been producing hand-crafted Calgary craft beer of the highest quality.

Any beer that is produced in a micro-brewery (which meets the requirements for being a micro-brewery) can be labelled as craft beer. However, the term “craft beer” is dreadfully generic, and many people dislike it for this reason. There are MANY different types of craft beer out there. As you venture outside of what you are familiar with, you will find out that each micro-brewery has its own way of doing things, and each of their brew is as unique as the ingredients that it is made from.

No craft beer is the same.

To go back to the original question, how does craft beer differs from commercially produced beer?

This question is difficult to answer for a number of reasons. We could say that craft beer tastes better, and even if it’s true in most cases, it still would not be accepted as a fact because tastes are subjective.

But if there is one thing that you need to know about craft beer, it’s that micro-brewers pour their heart and soul into their brews. And at the end of the day, this might be the biggest difference of all. :-)
