You know what beer is, but do you know what craft beer is? If you don’t know, don’t sweat it — you aren’t the only one.

Craft beer is basically beer that is produced in a micro-brewery, or as the name entails, a brewery that produces a small amount of beer. The American Brewers Association defines craft brewers as “small, independent and traditional” brewers. For a brewery to be considered a craft brewery, they have to meet those specifications. First they have to produce 6 million barrels of beer or less to be considered small. Second they have to be at least 75% controlled by a craft brewer to be considered independent. And third, they have to produce beer with a volume that consists of at least 50% “traditional or innovative” ingredients to be considered traditional.

So craft beer is quite simply beer that you don’t find in commercial outlets. It is produced by small breweries and it is the best way for you to soak in the local flavours of a city. If you’ve never had the chance to try craft beer, then we highly encourage you to do so. And the good news is that there is a type of craft beer for everyone!
